Week I: Introduction to Sandplay

Week II: Advanced Sandplay: Healing Complex Trauma

This training takes place in a spacious training site in a beautiful setting near forests and walking trails, with ample room for experiential activities in a nurturing environment. Venture about a mile to historic downtown Gig Harbor and discover waterfront cafes, restaurants and shopping. Take a walk on the Cushman Trail.

Week One of the Week-long Experiential Trainings in Sandplay Therapy (40 hours) covers the basic educational requirements as determined by Sandplay Therapists of America and the International Society of Sandplay Therapists. This training includes: Fundamentals of Sandplay (18 hours), Clinical Sandplay I (12 hours) and Symbolism (10 hours). 

Learning goals:

1.       Describe the foundational concepts of sandplay

2.       Create a psychotherapy office setting for sandplay with the necessary equipment

3.       Create a safe therapeutic environment where clients can freely play

4.       Demonstrate practical sandplay skills with clients

5.       Explain the importance of providing safety within the clinical process of sandplay

6.       Discuss sandplay work with children and adults

7.       Describe your own visceral and emotional experience of a symbol


Week Two is an extension of the first week-long training, but may also be attended by those who do not attend Week One. In the second week, we will explore using sandplay to heal complex trauma, and the concept of the four archetypal relational fields from Sandplay and the Clinical Relationship (Cunningham, 2013). We will integrate our understandings of neuroscience, trauma and body-based theories, Jungian theory and psychoanalysis with sandplay theory and practice.  This training includes: Clinical Sandplay (24 hours), Symbolism in Sandplay (10 hours), Jungian Theory in Sandplay (6 Hours).

Learning goals:

1.       Define complex trauma

2.       Describe how sandplay can be useful in treating complex trauma

3.       Name the four archetypal relational fields

4.       Discuss one or two qualities of each of the Four Relational Fields

5.       Explain some qualities of sandplay images that appear in trauma work

6.       Describe two concepts in Jungian theory

7.       Discuss or define “archetypal imagery” and “collective unconscious”

8.       Describe the role of mindfulness in sandplay therapy

These trainings are designed to give a solid foundation to the sandplay therapist. Trainings are open to those who are interested in deepening their skills and understanding, and also to those seeking certification.

Linda Cunningham, Ph.D., MFT, CST-T is the author of Sandplay and The Clinical Relationship (2013) as well as Relational Sandplay Therapy (2005) and many articles in the Journal of Sandplay Therapy. She has taught sandplay as well as contemporary relational theories for many years in both graduate and postgraduate settings. She is adjunct faculty in the Sonoma State University M.A. Depth Psychology Program and at the California Institute of Integral Studies, and a teaching member of STA/ ISST. She has a private practices in Gig Harbor, Washington.
